Why Journey into the Soma?

What we need now in the world is radical change. Change begins from within us.

At the heart of all personal and collective suffering is disembodiment. If we want to see more humanity in the world, we must first awaken the human experience living within ourselves. What does it feel like to be alive? Right here, right now? What does it move like, taste like, sound like? What expressions emerge from within when we give attention to the internal world? And now, how can we move differently into the external world? We need to reclaim the parts of ourselves that we have disowned, rejected, or ignored. How do we do this? Soma means “living body” and somatic practice is a way we can develop felt-awareness of our vitality from within. This process of awakening inner awareness offers us the opportunity to participate with our lives as a creative process, giving us more options and dynamic choices. By being with our felt-presence and engaging in body listening, new information, possibilities, and experiences begin to emerge.

About Lillian

Somatic Movement Educator & Therapist

Lillian Stamey

Hi! I am a registered somatic movement educator and therapist based in Brooklyn, NY. I study the living-body through organic inquiry, somatic practice, teaching, writing, dance-making, performance, and space-holding for the healing of others. I am endlessly fascinated by the interplay of body and consciousness. I received a Master’s Degree in Dance and Somatic Well-being: Connections to the Living Body from University of Central Lancashire and granted professional membership as a Registered Somatic Movement Educator & Therapist with ISMETA. Somalove is the name of my ever evolving somatic practice in which I explore various containers to guide others. I offer 1:1 sessions, group workshops, and now…online education. I have been sharing my love and expertise of body movement & awareness practices for over 10 years. As a facilitator, I aim to provide immersive, creative, and dynamic learning environments for self-exploration. I devoutly believe in the human capacity for transformation. Reviews

I could not recommend exploring this powerful practice with Lillian more.

Bahareh

I have had trouble finding therapists and modes of therapy that feel like a good fit for me and who make me feel comfortable. Even though I have only been seeing Lillian virtually, she made me feel comfortable, supported, and seen from day one. Each session with her leaves me feeling more aware, present, and always like I've learned something that I can practice daily, beyond our sessions together.

Lillian is a rare gem with a practice unlike any other

Diana

A session with her has the capacity to push you to a place of more emotional awareness, clarity, and healing. Her somatic exercises, guided meditations, and journal prompts allowed me to truly slow down and find a place of inner peace at various points in my life. Above all, she is a great listener and teacher, and I couldn't recommend her and her work enough

My experience with Lillian has felt extremely authentic.

Becky

She has a very kind nature and I felt seen and understood not only verbally but while moving together. Lillian has been able to provide a safe container for movement exploration that I felt I really needed to get out of my head and back into my own body.

She tailors every session to you and your needs

George

Lillian is ever present. She utilizes a variety of techniques that are fun, moving, challenging, impactful, and often all of the above. I feel more calm and radiant and in touch with myself after every session.

Lillian has a way of holding you that is so firm yet so gentle.

Jazmin

During our session, I was able to step outside of my buzzing mind and quiet enough of my intellectualizing in order to finally hear what my body has been trying to tell me, and what a breakthrough that was! This gifted peace is absolutely priceless and I truly couldn't have seen myself without her guidance.

Being a part of "Awakening Body" was an absolute delight.Le

Lillian's openness, encouragement and guidance through the process supported me to expand my relationship with my body. I enjoyed meeting other people with a passion for body wisdom, healing and creativity. My favourite part is that I am remembering the potency and abundance in my body during quiet, spacious moments - when I am able to bring awareness to my body in the present moment and listen, I receive myself in new and surprising ways. Learning new pathways to welcome my body means that I deepen my relationship with my body. This has been so healing for me. Thank you so much, Lillian.

“Living in an awakened body allows you to be the creator of your own experience.”

As a young girl I trained as a competitive gymnast, learning the art of discipline and performance of both my body and mind. I learned to go beyond what I thought was possible. However, in pursuit of perfection I found myself chasing the unattainable. I felt like I was in a perpetual state of failure.

My healing journey took me deep into the world of dance, yoga, meditation, and somatics. It was here I found self-acceptance, awareness, and a positive relationship with my body.

My dance career flourished with opportunities to work with various choreographers and perform throughout NYC venues, such as BAM Harvey Theater, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Center for Performance Research, and Dixon Place. I am the co-founder of the experimental dance theatre company, 96B, and choreographed and directed two dance films, In Between (2014), & Marigold (2018).

In 2015 I earned my 200-hour yoga teaching certificate at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health and went on to teach yoga in NYC.

I received a Master’s Degree in Dance and Somatic Well-being: Connections to the Living Body from University of Central Lancashire and was granted professional membership as a Registered Somatic Movement Educator with ISMETA. My somatic work has led me down many eclectic paths including working as a Neuru Fulbright research assistant for Professor Lindsay Gilmour traveling to Northern India to study Tibetan Ritual Dance. I have presented my somatic research at the 2019 BMCA Conference in Santa Barbara, Ithaca College, and Moving Body Festival (NYC). I’ve lead numerous workshops throughout various yoga & dance studios, as well as, host online gatherings.

As a facilitator, I aim to provide immersive, creative, and dynamic learning environments for self-exploration. My teachings are rooted in dance-making, performance, phenomenological inquiry and somatically informed self-care practice.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is the difference between somatic and other healing modalities?

If we want lasting change in our lives we must work from the ground up: from bodily sensation, perception, to meaning. Other types of therapeutic models work only in the realm of “the mind” (cognition, memory, motivation, etc.) and never journey to the deepest parts of our lived experience. While well intended these models can enforce disembodiment. Real transformation can only happen when we integrate mind & body through creating new felt experiences. Change happens when we feel it.
